'Glee': Jessalyn Gilsig talks Terri Schuester... should we expect a showdown with Emma?

By Korbi Ghosh | September 10, 2009 9:15 AM

As we eagerly anticipate the ratings for "Glee"'s season opener this morning, we're chatting with the fabulous Jessalyn Gilsig, who plays Terri, the insufferable, "gold digging" wife of the sweet Mr. Schuester (Matthew Morrison) on the show.

What's up with Terri's crazy and will she go after Emma (Jayma Mays), the girl that's got an eye on her man? Jessalyn is spilling...

Can't wait to find out how "Glee" did. It has to be a huge hit.

JG: I certainly hope so, but I'm like, oh my God, what if it's the most anticipated show nobody ever watches?

With "So You Think You Can Dance," it's pretty much the best night of TV.
JG: Nice! I like the way you said that.

And Terri, your character, is the most unlikeable part of the evening... in a great way.
JG: (Laughs) She's definitely a hard pill to swallow. Like, really hard. I think she gets set up at such a deficit that it's going to be a really long climb back. I'm hoping to get a little bit of sympathy, but I'm not even sure if I'm going to be able to pull it off because she definitely starts off in such a bad place.

Should we expect redemption for her?
JG: I don't know, it'll be really interesting because my instinct is that people will be split. I think that there will be people who will find a place in their heart for her, and I think there will be some people who won't. That's sort of what would happen on set. Some people would come up to me from the crew and be like, she's just a bucket of crazy. And then somebody else would come up to me and be like, you know, I can see she's just really scared and insecure. So I'm wondering if that's how it's going to play out in the audience. Some people will fall for her a little bit and some people will be like, that woman is poison, don't let me anywhere near her.

Even if they hate her, it'll be a love-to-hate her situation.
JG: Awesome. I hope so, because I don't want people to just hate her and have her go away!

Would be cool to see the side of her that Will fell in love with.
JG: Yeah, exactly. I think that, hopefully, that is what they were writing for towards the end of the 13 episodes. I think they were trying to explore what drew these people together initially and how they fell so far off the rails. And how could he not know this would happen? So hopefully we get to see that, but at the same time, as you said, you want to keep it fun. We're not doing a show about marriage counseling. But I think that's where [executive producer] Ryan [Murphy] and the other writers are really smart with all of the characters, they still try and ground it in something that is kind of believable, something that is a touchstone you can kind of return to. I think they were kind of curious and said, okay, where is the connection between these characters? Can we still find moments where you can
see why they're together, even in all this dysfunction?

Terri's desperation to get pregnant shows her humanity. She just wants to have a baby.
JG: Yeah, exactly. That's the thing, she definitely does not have the tools [to cope with real life]. It's all just so rational to her in the moment, but when you step back and look at it, it's just crazy. And I think in this next episode, you will meet my sister... and that's the good thing: Terri might be crazy, but nobody's crazier than [her sister] Kendra [played by Jennifer Aspen]. She almost makes Terri look kind of normal.

Is there a showdown coming between Emma and Terri?
JG: Yeah, definitely. They were very cool about creating that opportunity. And I loved to joke on set about it. I would give them so much grief like, basically Emma is a home wrecker. You know, just because she has a bob and she has red hair and she wears broaches, she's
so sweet and so amazing? No, obviously she's a home wrecker. Step off my man, girl. I'm gonna get you! We had a lot of fun, we had so much fun with that. I remember on the day this big thing went down, it was so much fun because the crew got word [of what we were shooting] and then they were like, oh my God, today's the day! I'm like, I can't believe you guys are excited there's gonna be a showdown. You know it's pretend, right? It's totally pretend. But everybody gets all into it, and it's kind of fun to see these characters finally meet
each other and see what happens between them.

Yeah, well Emma's totally crazy too.
JG: Yes, thank you! Yeah, once Terri gets a sense of Emma's OCD... there's a lot of opportunity for Terri to mess with somebody who reveals that insecurity, you know? It opens a window. And of course, there's Jane Lynch's character, Sue Sylvester, too. That's really fun to [play with].

Do you have scenes with Jane?
JG: We get to meet up at some point. I kind of meet up with everybody at some point, which is really fun, because at first I was working a little bit in a vacuum, but then I get thrown into the mix so that was a lot of fun.

Most of your scenes at the beginning of the season are just with Matthew Morrison.
JG: Exactly.

But you've got a big storyline brewing with the young and bitchy, Quinn (Dianna Agron).
JG: Yeah.

Will that be playing out throughout the 13 episodes?
JG: Yeah, it definitely does. And it really plays out for her. She was amazing. Amazing. She found such a great balance between the comedy and the archetype of her character. And she also, if you really imagined being in her position, she managed to find some emotional truth in it. It was really fun to watch her do that, because it's always a hard balance to find. With comedy, you want to keep it funny, you want to keep it light, but you also want to have some truth to the story lines your character is in.

The balance between laughter and crying? Oh, you guys have it down. Next week's episode is a perfect example of this, with Kurt's coming-out storyline.
JG: I'm so glad to hear you say that. That makes me so happy, because I know that Chris [Colfer], he worked so hard to find that balance. That was always what we were trying to figure out. What's the line? We were trying to find "the voice of the show"... So yes, that's great if that is coming through.

Speaking of voices, will you be singing at all?
JG: I haven't sung yet! We have to get picked up for [more episodes] if I'm going to get to sing. I think I'm the only one who didn't sing during these first 13. We talked about it and we wanted all the singing to be as supported as singing could possibly be and there really wasn't a natural time for Terri to break into song. So no, I never got to sing.

Would you like to?
JG: I would love to. I do sing. Not like Lea [Michele] or Matthew at all. Or Amber [Riley]. But if they gave me a really talky song I think I could do it.

Maybe you could rap?
JG: Or I could rap. That's awesome. Great. Now I'm dead in the water.

No, but Matthew is going to be rapping and break dancing, right?
JG: He is. He is amazing. I had seen him sing in the pilot and I heard that he was from Broadway and I knew that he was really talented right away. But it's always fun to hear him, and Lea too. It's amazing when you hear that come out of a human being. Chilling. And then we did an episode called "Acafellas" where Matthew does, he raps. It was like he morphed into Justin Timberlake. It was like the coolest thing. He can do it. It didn't look like a joke, it actually looked totally authentic, and he was fantastic. I think he has just an amazing musical range. People like that who have been singing their whole lives, they have such a command of that.

Well, we have to get Terri to do her thing now.
JG: Yes. But first we have to get the [back nine episodes] picked up. Then maybe I'll get to, well, rap. Me rapping. What a nightmare.

We'll create a buzz about Terri singing and rapping.
JG: Okay, good.

"Glee"'s first fan campaign, we need Terri to sing.
JG: A campaign. Awesome. Thank you.

I do have to ask you though, any chance you'll be back on "Heroes"?
JG: I don't know. I honestly do not know. I'm amazed at how much I get that question, you know, which is really nice, I have to say. It's just amazing how much people love that show and how they become so attached to your character. I think most of my fan mail now comes for "Heroes," which is funny, because I really wasn't on it for very long, but I guess people are
just so devoted to the show. But I haven't heard anything. The last thing I heard is what everybody else heard, which is that I blew up. But you never know on "Heroes."

You will be too busy to go back to "Heroes" because "Glee" is going to get the back nine pickup.
JG: Do you have a good track record for predicting these things?

Oh, I can see the future.
JG: Oh good. Then I'm going to Vegas right now.

Go buy yourself a new car.
JG: (Laughs) I'll be calling you [if you're wrong]!
